Isla Noir

Prologue

You know how it goes. The story's always the same. Sure, some might tell it differently, with different endings and beginnings, but the path they stumble down is always the same.

Charlie squints as she looks me up and down with a grimace. Then leans over and shouts, "Hey! You dead?”

I wince at the sound of her voice. “Might as well be,” I groan as I come to.

She kicks the heal of my boot. “Get up. You look like crap, and ya smell like hot garbage."

Way to knock a guy when he's down. "Thanks for noticing," I grumble as I start to pick myself up off the floor. Must have passed out again. Was following up on a case, but the details are vague. Head is still spinning. Guts are in turmoil. Splitting headache. Is that a lump on the back of my skull?! Need some coffee... and a stiff drink.

Taking another moment to right myself, still flat on my ass, I cock an eye up at my uninvited guest, "What do you want, Charlie? You come here to sweet talk me to death, or can I do you for somethin'?"

Charlie's lips curl with obvious disdain. "Been trying to get hold of you. Ya never checked in. Thought we might end up having to clean out an office today." Reaching toward the desk, she picks up one of the empty bottles of bottom-shelf whisky lying on the desk. She curls her lips again making little effort to hide her disgust. "Git yerself cleaned up. You stink."

As she pokes at the mess of notes scattered across the desk, something seems to catch her eye. "You know what, Sam. Why not take your mind off things," she says with a tone that one might almost mistaken for concern. "Maybe get out of town for a while. Save yourself some headache... and some trouble. There's always gonna be someone lookin' to even the score when you get back. I'm sure folks 'round here wouldn't mind missing ya." She pauses a moment, then mutters, "If they'd miss ya at all, that is."

For a moment, I consider it. "Ahhh, don't you start gettin' sweet on me now, darlin'. If I didn't know better, I'd say you been lookin' out for me. Perish the thought."

With a smirk, Charlie turns to leave. "Sweet ain't got nothin' to do with it. Watch yer back, Mack." And with that, she walked out.

The thought of washing my hands of the world and its problems was as sweet as rum punch, so sweet I could almost taste it. Funny thing is though, these sorts of things always have a way of turning sour when you need them to work out the most. Lady luck rarely smiles on the undeserving, or even the deserving for that matter.

Alright, that's enough feeling sorry for yourself. Get yer ass up, and find a way outta this mess, or feeling sorry is the last thing you'll ever do.

About

Hi, folks! My name is Nikko. I'm the developer of this game. Which really isn’t much more than just an environment at the moment, something I cooked up for kicks a few years back. This is the second in a series of island themed projects, made in 2015 with Unity 5... but you can read more about that here.

Despite the state of the project, and the fact that it's been shelved for years, I do still keep thinking about it. An inkling of an idea. One that I would eventually like to develop out further. But for now, I just want to share with y'all. I know it ain't much, but if it sparks even a bit of excitement and wonder in your heart as it does with me, then I'll consider the effort worth while.

Thank you for your interest. If you enjoy the experience and would like to see more, maybe consider tossin' a few coin my way.

I appreciate the support. Thanks for playing!
